The Scarlet Letter

Scarlet Letter

On Nov. 1, a law in Oklahoma will go into effect that will collect personal details about every single abortion performed in the state and post them on a public website. Implementing the measure will "cost $281,285 the first year and $256,285 each subsequent year. Here are the first eight questions that women will have to reveal:
1. Date of abortion
2. County in which abortion performed
3. Age of mother
4. Marital status of mother
(married, divorced, separated, widowed, or never married)
5. Race of mother
6. Years of education of mother
(specify highest year completed)
7. State or foreign country of residence of mother
8. Total number of previous pregnancies of the mother
(Live Births, Miscarriages, Induced Abortions)

Although the questionnaire does not ask for name, address, or "any information specifically identifying the patient, as Feminists for Choice points out, these eight questions could easily be used to identify a woman in a small community. "They're really just trying to frighten women out of having abortions, Keri Parks, director of external affairs at Planned Parenthood of Central Oklahoma, said. The Center for Reproductive Rights is challenging the law, arguing that "it violates the Oklahoma Constitution because it 'covers more than one subject' — a challenge that previously worked to strike down an abortion ultrasound law.

Did you know that some years ago, when the Air Force started keeping demographic data on religious adherents, that it had to pull the material down, because like this law here, the information gathered could be used to single people out? It was an OPSEC violation.

But I am not surprised about Oklahoma. Anti-Choicers are always looking for more ways to stigmatize women's health issues, so that we are too afraid to take control of our own health and sex lives and reproductive cycles.

They are resting their future victories on the idea that with this information, that insufferable church ladies {male and female} will Turn Oklahoma into an Abotion Payton Place. The Sluts must be punished!

Dr. Z -

No information is collected about the men the brazen slut has been whoring with?

Being Oklahoma, I would think that they would want to know the mixture of races that the little bastards could have been, so that they can wipe their furrowed brows at the bullet they just dodged on their welfare rolls.

Seriously, this is really appalling. Everytime I think I can no longer be shocked, the Xristian Xrazies sink to a new low.

Tengrain

OMG.. Haha, I'm not even going to try to top the comments above me. They are too smart and too funny. :)

Abortion is legal isn't it? Why do they need all this info? Sheesh??

I never thought that I could ever have an abortion. I was always "Pro Choice" but my choice would have been ...I'm having the baby.
Now that I'm 39 and...56 weeks.. If I even thought I was pregnant I'd have the coat hanger out so fast, your head would spin. :P

This is just the latest in yet another Texas-Oklahoma rivalry: who can be the loony-tooniest. Rick Perry has been raising the bar pretty high of late, so they felt that they had to make a bold counter-move, branding whores vs. seccession. I still think Texas is way ahead, personally.

Yes, and I have to say, that in Oklahoma there is a Make My Day Law. The good news is most of the Whores are packing heat. This could prove to be very interesting.

Seeing Eye Chick: This whole thing is disgusting, I don't know what to say about it. The first thing that popped into my head was the book "The Scarlet Letter". What happened to casting the first stone and all of that? It's pathetic.

Why would the Air Force keep demographic data on religious adherents? That's crazy.

Randal Graves: I think that the general populace is supposed to perform #9 in the sanctity of their own church. ;o)

Tengrain: I'm just waiting for the old find the witch in water trick - If you sink, you're innocent! ;o)

Sunshine: I was once 39 years old and 56 weeks old. Ah, those were the days! ;o)

daveawayfromhome: This sibling rivalry between states is going to be the death of this country. I may secede myself, as a nation of one! ;o)

Michael: That's not good enough. Her government should be doing that for her! :o)

Seeing Eye Chick: Hmm... I hadn't thought of that! The girls are gonna have a gunfight at the OK Corral! ;o)
