And remember, on that same weekend, Zaius Nation shall be hosting the July 4th edition of the Carnival of the Liberals! The topic for the event will be patriotism, and what it means to you. That topic would seem to be appropriate, considering the date of the event. On the other hand, feel free to digress, wander off topic, and say things that are irrelevant and totally inappropriate. I always do! Submissions start on June 21st, so it's time to start blogging!

For those unfamiliar with the Carnival of the Liberals can visit their website here. The submission policy is here.

To the light, bloggers, to the light! And curse the pain.

AP Poll: Bush Numbers Match All-Time Low

George Bush poll numbers are in free-fall!

(AP) Public approval of the job President Bush is doing now matches its all-time low, an AP-Ipsos poll says.

The survey, released Thursday, reflects widespread discontent over how Mr. Bush is handling the war in Iraq, efforts against terrorism and domestic issues. It also underscores challenges Republican presidential and congressional candidates will confront next year when they face voters who seem to be clamoring for change.
[...]
On issue after issue, approval of Mr. Bush's efforts matched previous all-time lows in the survey.
[...]
In another indication of the public's bleak mood, only 21 percent said they believe things in the U.S. are heading in the right direction, the worst mark since the AP-Ipsos poll began in December 2003.

Women, older people, and those with low incomes were especially discontent. Only three in 10 conservatives and similar numbers of white evangelicals — usually strong GOP supporters — expressed satisfaction with the country's direction. CBS News

"Good Morning, Starshine - The Earth Says Hello!"

It's time to take a step back to a time when lyrics actually meant something, songs were statements of authority about social ills and interpersonal communications. Music had depth, range and emotional content. For those in doubt, the lyrics to the song actually go "Gliddy glub gloopy, Nibby nabby noopy, La la la lo lo, Sabba sibby sabba, Nooby abba nabba, Le le lo lo, Tooby ooby walla, Nooby abba naba, Early morning singing song..." [ Lyrics ]

I'm convinced that what this country needs is another sociological goosing like we got from the musical "Hair" back in the sixties. It will be far easier on the country's digestive system if that goosing could be delivered via dancing hippies performing educational musical numbers with a strong liberal agenda. Let's face it, only hippies can save us from the ravages of Paris Hilton and the horrors of George Bush!

The song Good Morning, Starshine is one of those truly great songs with a happy tune and a positive message. I found versions of "Good Morning, Starshine" by Sesame Street, The Simpsons, Oliver, Danielle White, Tristan and Micah and Karlskoga kulturskola, Sweden. These two versions from Serena Ryder [ 2 ] have terrible audio.

The two songs "White Boys / Black Boys" are perhaps even more topical today the they were at the time of the films release. The interracial-sex overtones are not shocking at all now as they were then, but the homosexual subtext of the army recruiting officers takes on a whole new meaning in today's political climate.

I think my favorite song from "Hair" was the heart-wrenching "Easy to be Hard." [ Lyrics ] That was the scene when Hud's ex-fiancee shows up with his son, Lafayette, Jr. and asks him to come home. The power and emotional conflict of that scene in the film were a harsh dose of reality, the song itself was a stark contrast to the music in the rest of the film.

Very few songs have the same emotional kick as "Easy to be Hard." People alway say that "they don't make 'em like they used to," and in this case it's true. When was the last time you heard a song with the same degree of pathos? I found a couple other versions of the song by Jennifer Warnes on the Smother Brother's Show, and Cheryl Barnes.

I also found Hair by the the Simpsons, and The Age of Aquarius from the "40 year old virgin".

We all know that some of the most important things about science fiction is that it makes you question your beliefs, it gives you a sense of wonder, it lets you enter into worlds that are beyond the realm of our ordinary understanding of the universe. Of course the most important thing about science fiction is Slave Leia! [ 2 | 3 ]

But I digress, this post is really all about some of the great fan humor that has been done about Star Trek and Star Wars. My favorites are "Star Trek and the Holy Grail", "Monty Python - Black Knight (Star Wars)", and "Grocery Store Wars (Veggie Wars)", which has an important message about genetically modified foods. Somehow, you haven't really lived life to it's fullest potential until you have seen Luck Skywalker played by a cucumber.

"What really happened after the Deathstar blew up" gives new insight into the inner workings of the Empire's upper management, and the Star Trek 2.0 series from Adult Swim shows you a side of the Star Trek characters that you have never seen before. The best of those clips is "Star Trek Cribs - The Director's Cut", in which Spock shows you his cool pad where "he chills, he relaxes, he chill-axs."

Gosh, I can still fondly remember the day when science fiction was really all about Yeoman Rand. Oh, Janice!

Pelosi plays Hardball

Nancy Pelosi

Pelosi sees 'drastic' troop cuts by mid-2008
Bush's credibility on war in Iraq 'in very bad shape,' speaker says

June 7: Nancy Pelosi tells Hardball host Chris Matthews that President Bush's war policy is "taking us down a terrible path."

June 8, 2007 - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi predicted Thursday that there would be "a drastic reduction in troops" in Iraq by the middle of 2008, saying Democratic opposition to the war had "changed the debate on Iraq in our country."

In an interview airing Friday on MSNBC's "Hardball," Pelosi, D-Calif., told host Chris Matthews that while Democrats may have failed for now to force President Bush to agree to a timetable to withdraw U.S. troops, their agitation for disengagement from Iraq had backed the president into a corner.

Pelosi noted that Bush yielded to pressure from members of his own party in accepting benchmarks of progress that the Iraqi government was encouraged to meet to keep U.S. support.

The benchmarks in the emergency appropriations bill Bush signed last month were pushed by Sen. John Warner of Virginia, a highly respected Republican expert on defense, so "the president ... does have to answer to the benchmarks in the bill that passed," she said.

"In either case, I think he's in very bad shape," she added.

War opponents seek to strike a balance

Pelosi said she expected a "drastic reduction in troops" in Iraq by the summer of next year, leaving "only those needed to fight terrorism, to train Iraqis and to protect our diplomats and our troops that are there."

The speaker said Democrats would push to withdraw U.S. troops in future military appropriations. That way Democrats and anti-war Republicans could simultaneously "support the troops and end the war," she said.

"What you do is to have legislation that says that the funds for the troops will be used to redeploy them out of Iraq," she said, adding that such a measure could take the form of a bill to repeal "the authority of the president to go to war in the first place."

"There are several different resolutions to that effect," Pelosi said. "We will, most certainly, be voting on one of them."

Bush losing more support on Hill

Pelosi's warning came as a new Associated Press poll showed that only 28 percent of Americans said they were satisfied with Bush's handling of the war. With an eye on such numbers, senators put heavy pressure Thursday on Bush's nominee to coordinate the war effort to speed up a resolution of some sort in Iraq.

Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute, Bush's nominee to become deputy national security adviser on Iraq and Afghanistan, said at a confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee that Washington should show patience to allow the Iraqi government to consolidate control of the country. But members of the committee, including Warner, said that was unacceptable.

"Wake up," said Warner, the senior Republican on the committee. "We're paying a heavy price for them to establish this government."

Pelosi echoed calls by Democrats on the committee to begin withdrawing U.S. troops to put pressure on the Iraqis.

"I think we're on a path to ending the war," she said. "... How much longer can this continue?" MSNBC | video

All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re not unreasonable, I mean, no one’s gonna eat your eyes

Patience Hodgson is Mirth Personified

I recently wrote a post about Sandra Lou and her yummilicious bubblegum pop hit "Banana Split". and about how music today is just not fun anymore. Well, there is an exception to every rule, and in this exception I am talking about the exceptional Australian group, the Grates.

The Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience Hodgson

This band, and it's lead singer, Patience Hodgson, are quite different from Sandra Lou. Sandra Lou sounds hyper-rehearsed and studio tweaked, whereas Hodgson's voice is up and down and all over the place, always a heartbeat away from the false note that she never actually hits.

Sandra Lou is a one hit wonder, whereas the Grates have already had several minor hits, with the promise of more to come. Sandra Lou is all about a controlled environment, special lighting and minimalist art direction. The Grates are so busy laughing at themselves that the idea of that level of public relations and image control seems to be completely beyond them.

The Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience Hodgson

But Sandra Lou and the Grates do have something in common, enthusiasm. The lead singer, Patience Hodgson, is a careening skyrocket of activity that bounces off the fourth wall every possible moment, both physically and vocally. The level of energy and optimism that she maintains is enough to fairy-tale float any weary heart. She just makes you want to dance and have fun! She is mirth personified, without a mean spirit or a negative thought to hamper the sheer high-on-pixie-dust tinkerbell qualities that she embraces.

She bounces, she twirls, she claps, she is 197 feet off the ground and climbing. Her every movement is both effortless and unsteady, like a siren wearing a baby giraffe's overshoes. She is armed to the teeth with a frilly vintage tutu and a wickedly clumsy grin. She is the exact scientific definition of Angry Ballerina anti-matter. She makes you want to just get up and do something, but then you would have to take your eyes off her! Yipes!

The Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience Hodgson
The Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience Hodgson
When I first heard of this band it was through a photo I saw on a website, this one as a matter of fact. At first glance I thought that it was a picture of someone falling. Then I thought maybe it was photoshopped. Finally it dawned on me - it was a picture of somebody having fun! She catapulted into my heart from across the electronic divide, wearing little more than a green dress and the complete defiance of the laws gravity. I fell in love with her before I ever saw her face.

If you watch the their official video of their hit "Science is Golden", and then compare it to this version of the same song that is recorded live, you notice something very special about Hodgson, and the rest of the band. The don't have a pretentious bone in their bodies! They are just as goofy in either version! The are all just having fun mugging for the crowd, mugging for the camera, making faces at each other. These kids wouldn't know an overly-rehearsed moment if it bit them in their goofy smirks!

The Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience HodgsonThe Grates - Patience Hodgson

After all is said and done, Patience Hodgson looks completely unapproachable. She is the kind of girl you can only dream of from afar. A whiff of pixie dust and she is gone like the gossamer dew. A girl like that will forget you faster than she will lose your phone number.
The drummer looks like a girl that would love you back.
I kind of have a crush on the drummer, though.

Haliburton Finds New Ways to Fudge the Bottom Line

'Mutant Commandos.'
A new wrinkle has been unocovered in the recent story about the U.S. military putting amputees back on active duty, and even back into combat. The Pentagon has just been announced that the return of amputees to active duty is only the beginning. A new form of "Super Soldier" is being created and tested for military applications. The super soldier is a mutant hybrid nicknamed the "Mutant Commandos."

The new soldiers are much smaller than the standard soldiers of today, and thus need fewer requirements to carry out their duties. Officials at Haliburton are proud of their new prototypes, who they say that the company will be able to save battlefield deployment costs on food, shelter and transportation costs.

Detractors of the program point out that the mutants are barely human, and are ill equipped to fight in battle. Pentagon officials poo-poo the idea that the mutants are less than human.

"Why, they are at least as human as Dick Cheney!" Said one official. "Everybody know that Dick Cheney is a human, right?" Reports of the vice-president being a human are still being compiled as of this date.

If we can get them to the battlefield and save money for the company, then I just don't see what the problem is," Said a Haliburton spokesman. "I mean, what's good for the company is good for America. Am I right or am I right?"

Sleestak Out, Zaius In - In Love That Is!

Golly gee - When you turn those heaters on! - Woe is me - I must put my cheaters on!
You Snooze - You Lose, Sleestak!

Ha ha! My plan worked! While Sleestak over at Lady, That's My Skull was double timing his girlfriend with Bronze Age Cheryl, I made him believe that I was after Cheryl as well. This added incentive for the filthy reptilian insect to spend more and more time with the emotionally overwrought Cheryl. Little did he suspect that while he was pursuing Cheryl, I managed to steal the heart of his girlfriend, the most wonderful girl in the world, Hayley Mills!

My superior Cash-Fu has overcome Sleestak's "natural charm." (If that's what you want to call it.) I don't mind in the least that Hayley is high spirited or a little bit pschizophrenic - because after our first dance, I was in heaven! Now that we are together, we pass the time away on my yacht and going to Hollywood events. We are very happy together! And as you can see, our future is so bright, we have to wear shades.

Golly gee! When you turn those heaters on,
Woe is me!
Got to get my cheaters on, Jeepers Creepers!
Where'd ya get those peepers? On! Those weepers!
How they hypnotize!
Wher'd ya get those eyes?

Twiggy!

Twiggy!

Everybody's favorite forgotten supermodel, Twiggy! Women can probably thank Twiggy more than just about any other source for today's impossible dieting standards. Twiggy put the "Ahhh..." in Anorexia.

Here is a great video of Twiggy dancing and modelling in the late 60's. (Video will open in the window below.) Also some videos of Twiggy singing, "Here I go again", "Beautiful Dreams", and "In my life" from the Muppet Show. I also found some swingin' Twiggy photo tributes: [ 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 ]

If you are going to hang out with Twiggy, You will need to acclimatize yourself to the era. Start with "The Groovy 60s", "The Swinging sixties", and this handy video on "60's Fashion".

If you are going to immerse yourself in the swingin' 60's modeling scene, you can get yourself in the groove with this glamorous photoshoot scene from the film "Blow-up". I also found this odd video called "Twiggy Twiggy", which is supposed to be the inspiration for Jean Luc Godard´s cult movie "Breathless". Some girls of the 60's, like Edie Sedgwick, kept their figures trim with heavy doses of heroin and pop art! Here are a couple of very short videos of one of Twiggy's risque contemporaries, Edie. [ 1 | 2 ]

What was the best part of the 60's? Was it Woodstock? Was it the Beatles? Psychedelic drugs? First man on the Moon? The film "Easy Rider"? NO! The best part of the 60's was definitely MINI-SKIRTS! But the next best thing to mini-Skirts is video clips of Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In! The cast included Lily Tomlin, Ruth Buzzi, Judy Carne, Goldie Hawn, Henry Gibson, Joanne Worley, Gary Owens and Alan Sues!

Lou Dobbs is a Big Fat Idiot

I'm a populist! I am fighting for the middle class and pointing out corporate greed by ignoring the Iraq war and telling lies about Nancy Pelosi. Trust me! I am always non-partisan about Republicans. I am actually a big fat idiot, but at least I'm also xenophobic!
Everybody is talking about my favorite xenophobe, Lou Dobbs! Dr. Monkerstein has few choice words for the Dobbster, But Blue Gal has the winning Lou Dobbs quote for the week!

Lou Dobbs likes to play-pretend that he is "non-partisan," but his is just another republican shill. I fondly remember Lou repeating verbatim the Republican bilge about Nancy Pelosi's invisible plane for six days in a row.

Zaius Nation shall be hosting the July 4th edition of the Carnival of the Liberals!

Zaius Nation - Carnival of the Liberals!

I shall be hosting the July 4th edition of the Carnival of the Liberals! It is a great honor that I probably don't deserve - but I have them fooled thus far, so I just might get away with it. Those unfamiliar with this online periodical can visit their website here. The submission policy is here. Submissions don't actually start until after June 20th, so there is plenty of time to think about your submission.

The topic will be something along the lines of "defining patriotism," or something like that. That topic would be appropriate I would imagine, considering the date of the event.

Perhaps we could explain to the world that patriotism does not mean to blindly follow irrational leaders and ridiculous policies, but to follow your heart about what you know is best for the country as a whole. Patriotism does not mean hanging a magnetic American flag on your refrigerator, nor does it have anything to do with hating your fellow man.

Of course, this topic is broad enought that you could conceivably write about why you love cooking, comic books or blogging, and then relate it to patriotism.

Bora Zivkovic of "A Blog Around The Clock" has written two articles of interest on the subject, a definition of a Blog Carnival, and "Blog Carnivals And The Future Of Journalism".

To the light, bloggers, to the light! And curse the pain.

Glenn Beck is Finally Making Sense

Glenn Beck: 'I figure, why not just wipe out the entire human race by arming monkeys — sorry, sorry, simian-Americans — and that way, we can make everyone happy, the baby-haters and the monkey-lovers, you know?'

"I figure, why not just wipe out the entire human race by arming monkeys — sorry, sorry, simian-Americans — and that way, we can make everyone happy, the baby-haters and the monkey-lovers, you know?" Glenn Beck, addressing Roe v. Wade from a "Planet of the Apes" perspective, Glenn Beck, May 7 jossip.com

In all of the time that Glenn Beck has been on television, I think that is actually the first thing that he has ever said that actually made sense. Except one thing, Glenn... We are already armed.
